I had been taught by society as a child that whatever I wanted to do I had the power to do. Pro athletes, celebrities, and teachers all said that whatever I put my mind to I would be able to accomplish. Michael Jordan showed that if your tall enough, athletic enough, and naturally gifted enough you can be a pro basketball player. The media sold that dream to the children of the world. We still have that mentality today. Disney channel teaches my children that they are perfect and they have within them the power to do whatever they want.
I appreciate the encouragement, but they are all lies. I don’t care how hard you work, or how much you put into something you can not achieve your goals. I don’t care how far you make it, or how high you reach you can not and will not be able to find success in what you are trying to accomplish. I would argue that the majority of those in the spot light, though they believe they have, have not fulfilled their dreams as they lead us to believe they have.
The Bible teaches us that we are imperfect and unable to achieve righteousness on our own. God tells us that everyone on the face of the planet is guilty and “fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans) No matter how hard you try, or how much effort you put into it you will not be able to change that on your own. The grim reality is that there are so many people out there that are trying to be “a good person” or “live a good life”, even “treat people generally good”. As Timothy Keller said in a sermon once, if these people were judged by their standards for life, not God’s, but theirs they would not be happy with their judgement. We are not even capable of living up to our own standards of life so we have to make up a system that allows us to do so justifiably. Guess what, that is wrong.
Here is the deal, you are a sinner, I am a sinner, and there is nothing that we can do about it. No matter how hard you try, no matter how strict your rules are you will fall into the sin category. If you are leaving your life up to your own devices you will fail every time. Look at these celebrities caught in scandals, or adultery. Their “success” obviously wasn’t enough. Rehab, jail, tabloids, plastic surgery, and reality television jobs are all an attempt to find what they set out to find in the first place. Meaning!
Outside of God there is no meaning or purpose. Outside of God there is no fulfillment. No matter how much you acquire, or how far you make it up the “ladder” you will not find what you are seeking. There is no identity, no fulfillment, no joy, no purpose, and no hope outside of the Creator of all.
Thanks to God and His grace our inefficiencies and our imperfections are no longer a problem. Thanks to our Lord Jesus Christ all of our shortcomings and our failures can not and will not disqualify us for righteousness.
I don’t know in whom you plan to put your life. There are only two options. Either you can continue to fight the battle on your own and never see the final victory, or you can place your trust, hope and faith in Jesus Christ and be nothing less than conqueror. There in lies success, only in Jesus. In you…failure.
